Freunde der Kunsthalle e. V. (Friends of the Kunsthalle)

For the Friends of Kunsthalle, the Hamburger Kunsthalle is at the heart of all activities. With more than 18,000 members, it is the biggest »fan club« of a museum in Germany. The Friends of the Kunsthalle provide financial resources for exhibitions, acquisitions and publications. In their museum shop, they sell catalogues and other publications by the Kunsthalle. They finance an academic traineeship named after the founder of this circle of friends, Gustav Pauli. The Young Friends and the Friends Advanced offer younger members or those particularly interested in »young art« a tailored programme with guided tours, workshops and excursions.

Förderkreis Horst Janssen in der Hamburger Kunsthalle
(Support Group Horst Janssen at the Hamburger Kunsthalle)

With over 8,000 works, the Hamburger Kunsthalle holds the world’s largest collection of works by Horst Janssen (1929–1995). Together with the generous support of the Kulturstiftung der Länder (Cultural Foundation of the German Federal States) and private donors, the museum acquired one of the artist’s most significant series from the estate of Hartmut Frielinghaus in 1997. To adequately represent Janssen’s work and to honour the memory of his printer Frielinghaus, the support group Förderkreis Horst Janssen in der Hamburger Kunsthalle was founded that same year. The support group, of which Janssen’s daughter Lamme is also a member, has committed to supporting the Kunsthalle in the academic work related to the Janssen archive and exhibitions on the artist. Furthermore, the graphic works, documents and photographs from the substantial Janssen estate of the Hamburg-based collector Gerhard Schack (1931–2007) will be filed and digitalised in full within the next years.
